~Amiga 2000 :`
Details of the Amiga 2000 have been published in the March/April 1987
edition of Amiga World. It doesn't appear to have any new abilities over the
Amiga 1000, (ie same graphics resolution, CPU, sound etc) it is really a
repackaging job (because they didn't get it right first time) that makes the
machine internally expandable, and hopefully cheaper to expand (notably it
has a batterybackedup clock, 1Meg RAM, and room for a second internal drive).
Briefly :
~Price` : ~$US1500.`
~CPU` : 68000 @7.14MHz.
~RAM` : ~1Meg.`
~ROM` : ~Kickstart in ROM.`
~Expansion Slots` :~5 Amiga, 4 IBM PC/AT, CPU slot, Video slot`
~Disk Drives` : 1 880k, ~room for 2 more (including hard disk).`
~Ports` : Parallel,Serial,RGB,disk,mouse,sound
~Graphics` : upto 640 x 400
~Sound` : 4 channel
~Power Supply` : ~200 Watt`
~Mouse` : 2 button
~Software` : AmigaDOS & Workbench 1.2, Extras & AmigaBASIC 1.2.
~Clock` : ~Battery backed-up real time clock.`
Well that lot is more or less what I wanted back in the middle of last year
I didn't ask for the IBM/PC compatibility (NB IBM/PC compatibility isn't
standard - must add optional 8088 card), and Kickstart in ROM didn't really
matter, I am still waiting for an 68020, and real high-res graphics. (a 1000
by 1000 pixel, 4096 colour mode wouldn't go amiss!).
Now you see why Commodore didn't seem to be trying to sell the Amiga very
hard : we were the guinea-pigs testing out their prototype, now that they've
got it more or less right they might try to market it properly!
Disclaimer : The editor disclaims all responsibility for editorial comment,
if anyone asks then the editor will plead insanity (this statement of course
has nothing to do with me trying to safeguard the warranty on my Amiga!).
Now, what is Commodore's upgrade policy going to be - hmmm, lets see;
$US1500 is about $NZ3000, Amiga 1000's cost us $NZ4300 so how about Commodore
giving us Amiga2000's for a trade in of an Amiga1000 plus the cash difference
- that is : they give us $1000 cash with every trade in!
